Keep the business records organised from the first transaction, even while the studio is being set up. This guide is an administrative starting point. It does not determine your employment status, calculate a bill or decide whether a particular purchase is deductible.

Check your trading position

GOV.UK explains that someone providing services for payment may be trading and may need to report income to HMRC. Being called freelance or renting a chair does not, by itself, resolve every status question. Seek advice for the actual working arrangement.

If you trade as a sole trader, GOV.UK says you must register for Self Assessment if your gross trading income is more than £1,000 in a tax year. That means income before expenses, not the profit left after paying studio costs. GOV.UK also lists other circumstances that can require registration. Check the current registration guidance and trading-allowance rules for your circumstances; the threshold is not a tax-free allowance for every purpose.

Separate spending from deductibility

An item being useful in a studio does not automatically settle its tax treatment. GOV.UK distinguishes allowable running costs, personal use and equipment treatment under different accounting methods. Keep the evidence and ask an adviser about uncertain items.

Reconcile regularly

Set a recurring time to match receipts to bank transactions and appointment records. Note missing documents while they are still easy to retrieve. This is a bookkeeping habit, not a statutory timetable.

Keep current official guidance

Use the linked GOV.UK pages for reporting requirements and current rules. Apart from the registration trigger above, no tax rates or filing dates are reproduced here because they depend on circumstances and can change. See studio costs for a separate planning worksheet.
